NPFL 2025/26 season kicks off as Remo Stars defend title against Rivers United in blockbuster opener

NPFL 2025/26 begins in grand style

The 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season begins on Friday, August 22, 2025, marking the competition’s 54th edition and 36th since being professionalised.

The curtain-raiser paired defending champions Remo Stars with 2022 winners Rivers United. The fixture, holding at MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, replaced Ikenne Stadium due to ongoing renovations.

Remo Stars secured their first league crown last season with 71 points. Their squad has since been strengthened by the arrivals of Malian midfielder Chaka Coulibaly and striker Adama Goita.

The NPFL board confirmed 20 participating teams, including 16 from last season and four promoted sides: Warri Wolves, Wikki Tourists, Barau FC, and Kun Khalifat.

The season is scheduled to end on May 24, 2026. A mid-season break will run from December 30 to January 6, with the transfer window open throughout January.

League officials have announced preparations for Video Assistant Referee training and have directed clubs to improve stadium standards. However, broadcast and sponsorship arrangements remain under negotiation.

Despite optimism, concerns remain over revenue, broadcasting, and long-term stability. The NPFL’s progress this season will depend on addressing these challenges while sustaining on-field competitiveness.
