NRTC WEEKLY Highlights
Topics for This Edition: Tinubu’s Rivers emergency rule, Asake settled with father, hardship hitting harder, and Nigeria Super Eagles beat Rwanda.
Entertainment: Asake reconciled with father
Singer Asake reconciled with his father, Fatai Odunsi, after facing backlash on social media for allegedly neglecting him for years.
In a video, Odunsi revealed that Asake had been searching for a house to buy for him, settled his medical bills, and agreed to take responsibility for his 11-year-old daughter, Zeenat.
He also stated that the singer promised to check on him regularly, among other commitments.
Previously, in a viral video, Odunsi accused Asake of abandoning him and refusing to take his calls.
While battling a stroke, he claimed that Asake never assisted him and, out of desperation, turned to the public for financial help.
Asake later denied his father’s claims in a video, insisting that he had always supported him financially.
The former YBNL Nation and Empire Distribution signee emphasised that he had never failed in his duties as a son.
The reconciliation video sparked mixed reactions online, with many praising Asake for finally making amends.
Politics: Tinubu’s emergency rule in Rivers
President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, removing Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and elected lawmakers—a move that drew sharp criticism from Nigerians who saw it as an attempt to appease a political figure.
Tinubu suspended the governor and others for six months, appointing Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired vice admiral, as the sole administrator of the oil-rich state.
This decision raised concerns about the legal grounds for declaring a state of emergency, its consequences, and the potential risks involved.
Political figures such as Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor, and Atiku Abubakar, former vice president, condemned the move.
They also criticized the National Assembly for using a voice vote to approve the suspension.

Additionally, the President faced backlash for releasing withheld state allocations directly to the sole administrator, who confirmed receiving the funds and vowed to ensure financial accountability.
Although Fubara has responded, his next course of action remains unclear as of press time.
Business: Economic hardship deepened in Nigeria
Nigerians struggled under worsening economic hardship, with many blaming the policies of President Tinubu’s administration for the crisis.
One of the most significant policies, the removal of fuel subsidies, triggered a sharp rise in petrol prices, which in turn escalated transportation costs, the price of goods, and the cost of services.
The unification of exchange rate windows led to a substantial devaluation of the Naira, making imports more expensive and further fueling inflation.
Businesses that depended on imported raw materials or equipment also suffered due to the weakened currency.
The combined effect of these policies pushed inflation to record highs, significantly reducing Nigerians’ purchasing power.
Food prices soared, making basic necessities increasingly unaffordable for many families.
Sports: Super Eagles defeated Rwanda in crucial qualifier
The Super Eagles of Nigeria reignited their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes with a 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali.
The match played on Friday, saw Victor Osimhen deliver an outstanding performance, scoring both goals.
Osimhen dominated the game with his lethal finishing and attacking skills.
His goals came at critical moments, securing a vital win for Nigeria.
This victory was crucial, as Nigeria had entered the match under immense pressure, needing three points to keep their qualification hopes alive.
The win pushed Nigeria to fourth place in the group standings, boosting their chances of advancing.
