NSIB confirms Skypower Express aircraft crash lands in Owerri

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed the crash landing of a Skypower Express Cessna 172 aircraft at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State.

The chartered flight, en route from Kaduna International Airport to Port Harcourt International Airport, declared an emergency and diverted to Owerri.

The aircraft crash landed in the approach area of Runway 17, with all four crew members surviving the incident.

NSIB spokesperson Bimbo Oladeji stated that no fatalities occurred and no post-crash fire was reported.

Airport police patrol units and emergency response teams swiftly rescued the occupants upon receiving the distress alert.

Two crew members remain in stable condition, while the other two, initially unconscious, receive medical treatment at a hospital.

The runway stayed operational, allowing other aircraft to take off safely after the incident.

NSIB has commenced a formal investigation and coordinates recovery of the aircraft for detailed wreckage examination.

This event underscores Nigeria’s aviation safety protocols, reinforcing the NSIB’s mandate to probe incidents and enhance sector-wide preventive measures.
