Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi on Sunday joined former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and President Bola Tinubu at the Vatican for the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV.

In a personal reflection titled ‘A Shared Journey of Faith’, Obi described the occasion as a deeply spiritual moment that evoked memories of a similar gathering in 2013 when he and Fayemi attended the installation of Pope Francis while serving as governors.

Obi recalled his frequent visits to the Vatican, including as part of Nigeria’s official delegations to the canonisations of Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa.

He also noted his involvement with ‘Scholas Occurrentes’, a global educational initiative founded by Pope Francis to promote peace and intercultural dialogue.

Describing the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV as ‘particularly special’, Obi shared that he exchanged warm greetings with Tinubu and was pleased to witness the diverse assembly of global leaders and pilgrims who gathered in unity and faith.

“What stood out most was the Holy Father’s profoundly moving homily,” Obi wrote.

He highlighted the Pope’s call for compassion towards the poor and marginalised.

Obi said he prayed for Nigeria at the Vatican and reaffirmed his dedication to addressing poverty, improving healthcare, and investing in education.

He emphasised that a well-educated population is essential for building a just and prosperous nation.

“As we reflect on the Pope’s message, may our leaders embrace this call to confront poverty with courage and urgency,” Obi added.
