The World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Thursday engaged in a discussion with President Bola Tinubu on the state of Nigeria’s economy.
During the discussion at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, she offered her perspective on the ongoing reforms.
Okonjo-Iweala stated that she believed the current economic reforms are heading in the right direction and have led to a degree of stabilisation.
However, she emphasised the critical need for the administration to intensify its focus on building robust social safety nets to cushion the effects of these reforms on the population.

Acknowledging that Nigerians are facing significant hardship as a result of the economic adjustments, Okonjo-Iweala stressed the importance of implementing more programmes specifically designed to assist poor and vulnerable citizens.
She highlighted that such initiatives are crucial for helping people navigate the current difficulties.
Furthermore, she underscored the necessity of shifting focus towards economic growth.
Okonjo-Iweala called for the immediate initiation of programs aimed at creating more jobs and increasing the disposable income of citizens.
Okonjo-Iweala cited initiatives like the WTO-International Trade Centre (ITC) WEIDE Fund, which empowers women through digital trade, as critical examples of programs that can contribute to this goal.
