Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has approved an annual ₦1 billion bursary scheme to support students of Edo origin in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
The governor announced the approval following a town hall meeting with Edo youths, where student leaders passionately appealed for bursary support to ease the financial pressures faced by indigenes pursuing higher education.
Barely eight months into his administration, Okpebholo said the bursary scheme would run yearly and is aimed at reducing the financial burden on students and their families.
He stressed that the initiative forms part of his administration’s wider efforts to promote access to quality education and encourage academic excellence among Edo youths.

The governor further explained that eligibility for the bursary would be strictly based on verification through applicants’ local government areas, to ensure that only genuine indigenes benefit from the programme.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his commitment to supporting young people in the state and urged students to make the most of the opportunity to build their capacity and contribute to the development of Edo State and the nation at large.
Details on the application process and timelines will be announced by relevant government agencies in due course.
