Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has intensified its crackdown on cultism and threatened legal action against the Neo Black Movement, widely known as Black Axe, over the recent surge in cult-related violence and killings across the state.
The governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, revealed he has begun legal consultations aimed at prosecuting the group.
He cited public admissions by self-proclaimed leaders who have openly condemned the demolition of a building allegedly used as a base for violent activities.
“These individuals have publicly associated themselves with the structure and its operations, effectively confirming their involvement,” the statement noted.
“This admission provides grounds for lawful prosecution under the state’s Anti-Cultism Law.”
The demolished property, located within the Benin metropolis, was described as a central hub for coordinating attacks throughout Edo State.
He said the demolition followed credible intelligence and was conducted under the law passed by the Edo State House of Assembly.

Responding to recent claims by the group that he had renovated six public schools since assuming office, Okpebholo demanded immediate proof.
He called on the group to publicly list the names and locations of the schools, provide documented evidence of the renovations, and present official authorisation from the state.
He said failure to do so would lead to legal action for defamation, misrepresentation, and unauthorised interference with public property.
The governor announced plans to construct a divisional police station on the site of the demolished building.
According to him, the move will reinforce security in the area and serve as a deterrent to criminal groups.
Okpebholo warned that further demolitions of cult-linked buildings and properties were imminent.
“As Chief Security Officer of the state, Governor Okpebholo will not sit idly while innocent citizens are murdered by criminal gangs operating under the guise of cultism,” he said.
Okpebholo also clarified he has never been affiliated with any cult group or clandestine organisation and remains committed to the safety and welfare of all Edo residents.
