The Ondo State Government has reached an agreement with unions representing workers in its state-owned tertiary institutions after Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa approved a new salary and allowances framework.
The agreement followed a series of meetings between the governor, senior state government officials and representatives of academic and non-academic staff unions in the institutions.
The unions involved in the negotiations included the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU).

The discussions addressed outstanding issues on workers’ salaries, allowances, and welfare, and both sides eventually agreed to implement the Federal Government’s agreement with university-based unions.
As part of the resolution, Aiyedatiwa approved the full adoption of the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) for academic staff in state-owned universities, with adjustments to reflect the peculiarities of the state.
The governor said his administration considers education a key component of its development agenda and would continue to prioritise industrial harmony in the state’s tertiary institutions.
He said improving workers’ welfare, particularly in the education sector, remains essential to creating an environment where academic staff can perform effectively.

Aiyedatiwa said the implementation of the agreement would enable workers in the state universities to enjoy salary and employment conditions comparable to those of their counterparts in other parts of the country.
He also promised to maintain discussions with university management, unions and other stakeholders to address emerging concerns and prevent disruptions to academic activities.
The unions, in turn, welcomed the governor’s decision, saying the approval would improve staff morale and strengthen industrial relations within the institutions.
The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) chapter of ASUU also conveyed its appreciation to the governor in a letter signed by its chairman, Boluwaji Oshodi, and secretary, Y.K. Kazeem.
The union said the governor’s intervention reflected his administration’s commitment to the welfare of university workers and demonstrated a worker-friendly approach to governance.

The unions also pledged to reciprocate the government’s gesture by promoting industrial peace, supporting uninterrupted academic activities and improving productivity across the state-owned universities.
