Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has celebrated academic excellence in grand style, rewarding African Spelling Bee Champion, Adeolu Oluwadamilola, with a total of ₦8 million in cash gifts.

At a reception held yesterday at the governor’s Office in Ado-Ekiti, Oyebanji also confirmed that the state government would fully sponsor Oluwadamilola’s trip to China, where she will represent Africa at the World Spelling Bee Championship later this year.

The governor distributed the ₦8 million reward to reflect the team effort behind the achievement, allocating ₦2 million to Adeolu Oluwadamilola, ₦1 million to her coach, Esther Omolayo, and ₦5 million to St. Lawrence Metropolitan College.

Beyond the cash rewards, the government also committed to covering travel expenses for Oluwadamilola, her mother, her coach, and two representatives from her school for the global competition.

Oyebanji described the young champion’s achievement as a proud reflection of Ekiti’s long-standing reputation for academic excellence.

He noted that her victory embodies the state’s core values of discipline, diligence, and integrity, expressing confidence in her ability to shine on the world stage.

“Damilola has once again shown what Ekiti people are known for. Having conquered Africa, the next goal is to conquer the world,” he said.

The governor added that his administration had, over the past three and a half years, focused on strengthening the education sector through a three-pronged approach—updating learning content, improving teaching methods, and investing in better learning environments.

Proprietor of the school, Lawrence Oluwafemi, praised the Governor’s deliberate investment in education, noting that such recognition boosts morale among students and educators alike.

In her response, Oluwadamilola expressed deep appreciation for the support, describing the sponsorship as a major encouragement to aim for top honours at the global level.

Oyebanji ended the event with a message to students across the state, urging them to stay committed to their studies and reminding them that hard work remains the most reliable path to success.
