Veteran Nollywood actress, Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has advised parents against making life too easy for their children, saying excessive protection can prevent them from learning how to survive and become responsible adults.
Ozokwor made the remarks during a recent interview with media personality Femi Baba, where she spoke about parenting, discipline and the need for young people to experience hard work.
The actress recalled an incident involving one of her sons, saying she once asked him to leave her home so he could find his own way and learn how to provide for himself.
According to her, she took the decision because she wanted him to understand that he could not depend on his parents forever.
She explained that parents may be tempted to give their children everything they did not have while growing up, but such an approach could leave the children unprepared for the realities of life.

She noted that shielding young people from every form of difficulty may prevent them from developing the skills and strength needed to face challenges.
Ozokwor said she deliberately raised her children with discipline and taught them the value of working for what they wanted.
She believes those lessons have helped them become independent and successful in their own lives.

The actress also warned parents against assuming that their children will automatically be protected by family wealth after they are gone.
She said young people should be encouraged to build their own lives and careers rather than simply waiting to inherit their parents’ property.
According to her, parents should understand that love does not always mean providing everything a child wants.
She said allowing children to work, face challenges and experience some level of hardship can help them become more responsible and capable.
She said: “The fastest way to ruin a child’s life is to say you don’t want them to suffer the way you did. When you’re gone, they may start fighting over your property. I told my son, ‘My house isn’t yours. Go and work for your own.’”
