The 50-year-old icon steps into the role after Pape Thiaw was dismissed following a disappointing last-32 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He accumulated over 100 caps for France, winning both the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. Officials believe his impressive global profile fits their long-term project.

Senegal’s football federation (FSF) said the appointment reflects its “desire to strengthen its high-level technical staff” and is “perfectly aligned” with the nation’s sporting ambitions.

The midfielder enjoyed a stellar playing career packed with major domestic silverware. He won three Premier League crowns and four FA Cup titles during his famous stint with the Gunners. Later periods included trophy-laden spells with top Italian clubs and Manchester City.
