Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Tuesday, paid a courtesy visit to former President Goodluck Jonathan at his Abuja residence to plead with him not to abandon the party.
The delegation which was led by the acting National Chairman of the party, Yemi Akinwonmi, included former Caretaker Secretary of the PDP in the South-West, Daisi Akintan, and the Secretary of ex-officio forum and a member of the National Executive Committee, Mrs Helen Taiwo.
The visit of the PDP leaders, according to a member of the party’s caretaker committee, became necessary following rumours that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was making subtle moves to lure the former President into its fold.
Though the meeting between Jonathan and the three-member team was held behind closed doors, those privy to the outcome confirm was meant to acquaint him with the “current happenings within the party and seek his advice on how best to find an amicable solution to the crisis.”
āThe South-West team were with the former President to appeal to him not to abandon the party.
āThey also appealed to him to show more than a passing interest in the affairs of the party by becoming more actively involved in the activities of the party.
“The former President assured the team that he would not abandon the party,” the source said.
Jonathan has become the beautiful bride of political parties in the run up to the 2023 presidential and general elections as many still see him as a political leader with influence both in the country and the rest of the world.
And as such, the parties have been doing everything possible to lure him to their fold while his parent party is also trying to tie him down.
