The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved to initiate legal action against Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other top party members who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This decision followed a marathon six-hour closed-door meeting held on Tuesday at the PDP’s national secretariat in Abuja. At the end of the meeting, the party directed its National Legal Adviser to begin legal proceedings aimed at recovering what it described as the party’s “stolen mandate” in Delta State.

According to a communiqué released after the meeting, the PDP leadership instructed its legal team to seek judicial redress against the governor and other defectors in a bid to reclaim the mandate allegedly lost due to their departure from the party.

In an effort to stabilise the PDP’s presence in Delta State, the NWC appointed South-South Zonal Chairman, Emma Ogidi, to oversee the party’s affairs in the state and lead a restructuring process.

Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum stated, “We have also instructed the national legal adviser to recover our mandate that they have taken away. The fortune of this party cannot be just left in the hands of our adversaries, so you (the national legal adviser) will take legal action to retrieve those mandates.”

He added, “We’ve just instructed the zonal caretaker committee to oversee the party in Delta, after dissolving all the structures that have already been there since the majority of them have shifted.”

Beyond addressing the wave of defections, the NWC also adopted key proposals from the PDP Governors’ Forum. It scheduled the next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting for May 28 and fixed the party’s national convention for August 28 to 30, 2025
