A medical doctor, Dr. Anthea Nwandu, has called for justice to be done in the case surrounding the death of the son of renowned Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday, Nwandu expressed concern over the repeated delays in the coroner’s inquest into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi Esege.

She said those close to the family are hoping that the legal process will move forward without further setbacks and that all procedures will be followed properly.

According to her, the continued postponement of the proceedings has made an already painful situation even harder for the family.

She said each delay prolongs the emotional burden on those affected and keeps them waiting for answers about what led to the child’s death.

Nwandu noted that the case, which was expected to make progress months ago, has experienced several interruptions.

She said the latest adjournment means the matter will now remain unresolved for several more months, adding that those involved are simply seeking answers and a fair outcome.

She described the emotional state of the family as heartbreaking, saying they continue to struggle with the loss of the child.

Nwandu stated that the public attention surrounding the case and the lengthy legal process have only added to their distress.

The physician said that while no court decision can reverse the tragedy or bring the child back, it is important for the family to understand what happened and to see that justice is carried out.

She added that the prolonged proceedings have increased the pain being experienced by those affected.

The case arose after the death of Adichie’s son on January 7, 2026, at a hospital in Lagos, where allegations of medical negligence were raised.

The coroner’s inquest into the child’s death began on February 25, 2026.

However, the proceedings faced a setback in May when the coroner sitting at the JIC Taylor Courthouse on Lagos Island suspended the hearing pending further directives from Chief Coroner, Mojisola Dada.

On Wednesday, the matter was again adjourned, with the next hearing scheduled for October 8, 2026.
