Premier League game week 5 saw the first round of fixtures after the international break brought to our screens.
In the same fashion as the initial start to the season, there were lots of dramas, including late goals, VAR controversies, and shock results.
Let’s digest the action in full.
Saturday Premier League game week 5
Everton 2-2 Liverpool
Most Liverpool fans would love for things to pan out differently. This is not just because of the result, but also due to the injury sustained by Virgil Van Dijk. The Dutch defender is now ruled out for 8 months.
Following Everton’s meteoric rise, here was no favourite heading into the game. The Merseyside derby was a proper one in all aspects, as opposed to the one-sided show we’ve had for a while.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men put up a fight despite conceding Sadio Mane’s attempt as early as the 3rd minute. They fought back and got their equalizer as Michael Keane drew them level.
Mohammed Salah scored his 100th Liverpool goal to put The Reds ahead again in the second half. Everton responded quite well as Dominic Calvert-Lewin continued in fine goalscoring form. The current highest goalscorer converted from Lucas Digne’s cross.
Richarlison was also given a marching order in the affair.
Chelsea 3-3 Southampton
It was a great start for Chelsea as they were 2 goals up by the 28th minute. New signing Timo Werner finally got his first Premier League goal. He went on to score a second which extended Chelsea’s lead.
Danny Ings however managed to pull one back for The Saints just before half time. Another Chelsea new signing, Kai Havertz restored Chelsea’s lead.
But things went south quickly as The Saints levelled up by full time with goals from Che Adams and Vestergaard.
Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal
Raheem Sterling scored the only goal of the game as he reacted quickest to Bernd Leno’s save to score a rebound. This earned Manchester City their second win of the season and their first at the Etihad.
It was City’s first clean sheet this season as they move up to 10th position on the table.
Kun Aguero made his first start of the campaign coming back from the injury sustained last season. Thomas Partey – Arsenal’s deadline day signing – also came off the bench for Granit Xhaka late on to make his debut.
Newcastle United 1-4 Manchester United
Things looked bleak as The Red Devils conceded an early goal when Luke Shaw scored an own goal.
Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s men however showed character and quality as they came back from behind to win the game 4-1.
Steve Bruce’s men sat back and allowed Manchester United control possession and tried to hit them on the break. They were however punished as United had 28 attempts.
Newcastle were lucky not to have conceded more. Their goalkeeper Karl Darlow, became the first Premier League goalkeeper to save Bruno Fernandes’ attempt from the spot-kick. Another Bruno Fernades attempt was ruled out by the VAR due to an offside in the build up.
Sunday Premier League game week 5
Sheffield United 1-1 Fulham
Fulham and The Blades each earned their first point of the season as they drew at Bramall Lane.
Despite being dominated in the first half, Fulham took the lead in the 77th minute through Ademola Lookman. But United kept up the pressure and got their reward as they levelled up in the 85th minute through Billy Sharp from the penalty spot.
Crystal Palace 1-1 Brighton and Hove Albion
Roy Hodgson’s men were denied all 3 points at home as Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister cancelled Wilfred Zaha’s lead. The hosts played on the back foot for most of the game. It looked as though they were just trying to hold on to their early lead and try to see out the game.
However after the game, Roy Hodgson had much to say about the goal scorer. The gaffer is convinced that he (Zaha) has to offer more in games considering his abilities.

Tottenham 3-3 West Ham
This 6 goal thriller is the true definition of late drama. Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min both got their names on the score sheet and also registered assists.
However, West Ham’s Manuel Lazini came off the bench to steal the spotlight with his banger at the last minute of the game to draw David Moyes’s men level.
The match seemed set and done as Spurs were leading 3-0 at the 80th minute with 2 goals from Harry Kane and an early goal from Heung-Min.
However, things went West Ham’s way very quickly as a goal from Fabian Balbuena and an own goal from Davison Sanchez reduced the deficit. Lazini then leveled the scoreline in added time before receiving a yellow card.
Leicester City 0-1 Aston Villa
Leicester City have been struck by injury woes and are facing the issue of a small squad.
However, this is not to take away from the effort Dean Smith has made to turn things around at Villa as they look totally transformed.
He’s rewarded Villa’s hierarchy for keeping faith in him as they’ve been in wonderful form this season. They have grabbed all available 12 points from 4 games. They dominated The Foxes in ball possession but didn’t seal the game until Ross Barkeley’s late winner.

Monday Premier League game
West Bromich Albion 0-0 Burnley
West Bromich Albion grabbed their second point of the season as they played out a goalless draw with Burnley at home. The result put Burnley in 18th place with a game in hand and. West Brom is 17th on the table.
Leeds United 0-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Raul Jimenez’s deflected goal gave Wolves the win over Marcelo Bielsa’s men. Although Leeds were dominant in the first half, Wolves took charge of the second half.
Wolves had a disallowed goal earlier in the game, when Roman Saiss lashed home Podence’s cross. It was ruled out as offside by the VAR.
