Mexico got their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign off to a winning start on Thursday, defeating South Africa 2-0 in the tournament’s opening match before a packed crowd at the famous Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
The hosts wasted little time settling into the contest and took the lead in the ninth minute through Julián Quiñones. The forward capitalised on a defensive lapse to put Mexico ahead and spark celebrations among the home supporters, who turned out in large numbers for the opening fixture of the first-ever 48-team World Cup.
Mexico controlled much of the first half and looked the more dangerous side, while South Africa struggled to create clear opportunities going forward. Despite periods of possession, Bafana Bafana found it difficult to break through a disciplined Mexican defence.
South Africa’s task became even harder five minutes into the second half when midfielder Sphephelo Sithole was sent off, leaving the African side with 10 men. The dismissal shifted momentum further in Mexico’s favour as the hosts pressed for a second goal.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 67th minute when veteran striker Raúl Jiménez headed home Mexico’s second goal of the afternoon. The strike carried added significance for the 35-year-old, who scored his first-ever World Cup goal after years of representing his country on football’s biggest stage.

South Africa’s frustrations deepened late in the game when captain Themba Zwane was also shown a red card following a VAR review, reducing his side to nine men for the closing stages. Mexico comfortably saw out the remainder of the contest to secure all three points.
The match was not without disciplinary drama for the hosts either, as defender César Montes was sent off in stoppage time, ensuring the tournament opener ended with three red cards in total.
Played before a crowd of more than 80,000 spectators, the victory marked an ideal beginning for Mexico’s quest to impress on home soil. The result also moved Javier Aguirre’s side to the top of Group A, which also features South Korea and Czech Republic.
