Real Madrid held late by Betis as title hopes slip further

Arbeloa's charges suffer another set-back towards title ambitions after Betis hold Los Blancos.

Real Madrid suffered a crushing late setback after conceding deep into stoppage time against Real Betis. The result leaves their already slim title hopes hanging by a thread.

With only five matches remaining, Madrid now trail Barcelona by eight points. The gap could widen further if the leaders secure another victory this weekend.

Vinícius Júnior had earlier put Madrid ahead in the 17th minute with a composed finish. The goal followed a rebound after Federico Valverde tested the goalkeeper from distance.

Madrid pushed for a second but lacked sharpness in key moments. Kylian Mbappe saw a goal ruled out and missed another chance, while others failed to convert.

Late collapse leaves Madrid facing trophyless season pressure

Betis gradually grew into the contest and began to threaten more consistently. However, Andriy Lunin produced several important saves to keep Madrid ahead.

The decisive moment came in stoppage time when defensive confusion proved costly. Hector Bellerin capitalised after Ferland Mendy lost possession, firing home the equaliser.

The late goal leaves Madrid on the brink of a disappointing campaign. They are also out of the Champions League, increasing pressure on manager Alvaro Arbeloa.

Madrid had briefly reduced the gap earlier in the week with a win over Alaves. However, Barcelona quickly restored their advantage with another victory.
