The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies has attributed the glitch that marred the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results to human error, not a technological failure.

The results, released on May 9 by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), revealed that over 78 percent of candidates scored below 200 out of the maximum 400 points.

Speaking to journalists at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Committee, Oboku Oforji, disclosed that preliminary findings showed the issue stemmed from human mistakes rather than the technical fault earlier claimed by JAMB.

“We sincerely apologise on behalf of the examination body (JAMB) to all Nigerians,” Oforji stated.

The House had on May 15 resolved to investigate the alleged technical error reported by the examination body.

“The committee recognises the courage and sincerity of the JAMB Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, for accepting the fault on behalf of his team and apologising to the parents, candidates, and the nation in general.

“However, these human errors were avoidable because it was due to negligence by JAMB.

“The Committee also appreciates the eagerness and determination of Nigerian students in pursuing their education to improve the future of our country,” he said.

While describing the incident as “unfortunate,” Oforji commended the board for maintaining a consistent process throughout the examination stages—from registration to result release.

He called for “an independent and thorough investigation” into the matter and said the committee has recommended reforms to JAMB to prevent future occurrences.
