Rodrygo’s World Cup dream shattered as attacker suffer devastating ACL blow

25-year-old Real Madrid forward Rodrygo out of World Cup after ACL injury.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in his right knee. The Spanish giants confirmed the diagnosis after medical tests on Tuesday. Consequently, surgery will follow and his absence could stretch close to a year.

“Following tests carried out today on our player Rodrygo by Real Madrid’s medical services, he has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a torn outer meniscus in his right leg,” the club announced.

The injury rules him out of this summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. It also sidelines him for the remainder of the domestic season.

The 25-year-old featured for over 30 minutes in Monday’s 1-0 defeat to Getafe CF. During that cameo, he sustained the damage that scans later confirmed. What initially seemed discomfort quickly became heartbreak.

“One of the worst days of my life, how much I always feared this injury… maybe life has been a little cruel to me lately,” Rodrygo wrote.

“I’m out for the rest of the season with my club and out of the World Cup with my country, a dream that everyone knows how much it means to me.”

Real Madrid injury crisis deepens ahead of key La Liga and Champions League clashes

Rodrygo becomes the fifth Madrid player to suffer an ACL injury since 2023. The list includes Thibaut Courtois, David Alaba and Dani Carvajal. Meanwhile, Eder Militao has endured the setback twice in two seasons.

In addition, Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe are battling fitness concerns. Mbappe recently travelled to Paris for further knee tests. Therefore, Madrid’s medical room remains crowded at a decisive stage.

Domestically, Los Blancos sit second in La Liga, four points behind FC Barcelona. They face Celta Vigo next before hosting Manchester City in Europe.

For Rodrygo, the blow is deeply personal. He played five matches at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Now, another global stage slips painfully from his grasp.
