Premier League shocker: Last-place Wolves stun Liverpool
Wolves 2-1 Liverpool: Andre's 94th-minute winner shocks Reds

Andre scored a 94th-minute winner to give last-place Wolverhampton Wanderers a 2-1 victory over Premier League champions Liverpool, marking the first time in nine years a bottom-placed side has defeated the reigning champions.

The Brazilian midfielder’s deflected strike sent Molineux Stadium into raptures on Tuesday night, completing a remarkable week for Wolves. The victory follows Friday’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa, giving the club back-to-back league victories for the first time since April 2025.

Rob Edwards’ side delivered a disciplined defensive performance before springing to life in the final minutes. Substitute Tolu Arokodare held off Virgil van Dijk to set up Rodrigo Gomes, who delicately chipped Alisson in the 78th minute for the opener.

Mohamed Salah ended his 10-game Premier League goal drought in the 83rd minute, capitalizing on a Wolves defensive error to equalize. But with both sides pushing for a winner, Andre’s long-range effort deflected off Joe Gomez and wrong-footed Alisson deep into stoppage time.

Liverpool’s stoppage-time struggles continue

The defeat marks the fifth time this season that Arne Slot’s Liverpool has conceded an injury-time winner — the most by any team in a single Premier League campaign.

“We are losing far too many football games and dropping points,” Slot admitted afterward. “The three times we have lost in the last 22 games have all been in extra time”.

Liverpool remains fifth with 48 points, missing the chance to move level with third-place Manchester United and fourth-place Aston Villa.

Relegation battle takes back seat to revival

Despite the historic result, Wolves sit bottom of the table, 11 points from safety with eight matches remaining. The club has won just three league games all season.

Yet Edwards’ team has now taken points from Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Liverpool in their last three home fixtures. The 43-year-old manager sprinted down the touchline after Andre’s winner, later joking: “It’s the groin this time. I felt it falling apart”.

“It is Liverpool Football Club. It doesn’t matter the position we are in at the moment; whenever you beat them, you have to enjoy these moments,” Edwards said.

The last time a bottom-placed Premier League side defeated the reigning champions came in October 2017, when Crystal Palace beat Chelsea.

Both teams meet again on Friday at Molineux in the FA Cup fifth round.
