Ronaldo confirms 2026 World Cup will be his last, says retirement Is “one or two years away”

Cristiano Ronaldo confirms the 2026 World Cup will be his last, hinting at retirement within two years as he nears 1,000 career goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo has officially confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark his final appearance on football’s grandest stage.

The Portuguese legend, now 40, revealed he plans to retire “in one or two years,” ending a glittering career that has redefined the sport for nearly two decades.

Speaking at the Tourise Summit in Riyadh, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner made the announcement while reflecting on his journey and the future.

“Definitely, yes,” Ronaldo said when asked if 2026 would be his last World Cup. “I will be 41 years old and I think that will be the moment to stop in big competitions.”

Having scored 953 goals for club and country, Ronaldo remains football’s most prolific marksman. He continues to chase the near-mythical milestone of 1,000 career goals, a feat no player has ever achieved.

The final chapter of a historic career

Currently playing for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo shows no signs of slowing down on the pitch, yet acknowledges the clock is ticking.

“Let’s be honest, when I said soon, I meant probably one or two more years,” he explained. “I’ll still be in the game, but not for long.”

Throughout his career, Ronaldo has amassed almost every major trophy — from the UEFA Champions League titles with Manchester United and Real Madrid to the Euro 2016 triumph with Portugal. However, the World Cup trophy has remained elusive, the only missing jewel in his crown.

As Portugal continue their push toward qualification, with a crucial match against the Republic of Ireland on Thursday, Ronaldo’s focus remains on leading his nation one last time on the global stage.

His farewell at the 2026 World Cup — to be held in Canada, Mexico, and the United States — promises to be one of football’s most emotional moments. For millions of fans worldwide, it will mark the end of an era defined by records, rivalry, and relentless excellence.
