In a major step toward realising the Lagos Mega-City vision, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the total redevelopment of the Obalende bus stop into a world-class, modern transport hub.

The ambitious project, tagged the “Y’ELLO Bus Park,” will be fully financed by telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

The transformation aims to sanitise one of the state’s most congested transit points, turning a historically degraded area into a secure and aesthetically pleasing public space.

According to a statement from the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the new hub has been designed with sustainability at its core.

It will feature the installation of solar panels to power operations and reduce the facility’s carbon footprint.

The hub will also include a dedicated station for recyclables and a sustainable biodigester system to manage wastewater.

Planned tree planting will improve local air quality and enhance the visual appeal of the area.

In addition, the facility will offer modern amenities, including over 60 public toilets to eliminate open defecation, as well as organised ticketing booths and food and beverage kiosks.

The Obalende axis serves as a critical gateway connecting the Lagos Mainland to Ikoyi and Victoria Island via the Third Mainland Bridge.

However, years of rapid urbanisation had led to a breakdown of order, characterised by illegal shanties, improper waste disposal, and the presence of non-state actors.

To ensure the new hub remains orderly, the project will include dedicated road camps for LAWMA sweepers and security agencies, including the Neighbourhood Safety Corps and KAI (Kick Against Indiscipline).

Organised signage and regulated bus operations will replace the current informal chaos.

Beyond transportation, the hub will serve an environmental purpose by protecting the integrity of the McGregor Canal.

By managing waste and preventing illegal dumping in the area, the project aims to stop the frequent silting that currently leads to flooding and requires constant government intervention.

“This redevelopment will convert what was once a notorious and degraded space into a functional, secure, and community-centred facility,” Wahab stated.

The approval follows a site visit by Sanwo-Olu in February 2024, during which he expressed dissatisfaction with the area’s deteriorating state.

After a series of enforcement cleanups in December 2025 and January 2026, work on the Y’ELLO Bus Park is now set to commence immediately.
