The Nigerian Senate has confirmed several high-profile executive appointments following requests from President Bola Tinubu and the successful vetting of nominees by relevant committees.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin who presided over the plenary announced this in a statement on his X page on Friday.
He said the session marked a step in filling key vacancies within Nigeria’s diplomatic, electoral, and religious administrative sectors.
The Senate formally approved the following appointments: Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf was confirmed as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).
Saidu Usman Dakingari was confirmed as a non-career Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq (Rtd), confirmed as National Electoral Commissioner (NEC) representing the North East geo-political zone for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The confirmations followed committee reports detailing rigorous vetting processes for each nominee legislative activity and security concerns, alongside executive approvals.
The Senate conducted the first reading of five new bills, signalling an active legislative calendar ahead.
However, the plenary took a serious turn when Senator Emmanuel Udende raised a motion on the recent surge of violence in Kwande Local Government Area, Benue State.
The Senate condemned the ongoing killings of innocent civilians in Benue and other affected regions across the federation.
While praising Tinubu’s efforts to combat violent crime, lawmakers stressed the need for more decisive measures in volatile areas.

To restore order and protect displaced citizens, the Senate passed a resolution urging the Federal Government to establish a military base in Kwande to provide a permanent security presence, facilitate the safe return of displaced residents to their ancestral homes and strengthen intelligence sharing to prevent future attacks on vulnerable communities.
Jibrin emphasised that the safety of Nigerians remains the 10th Assembly’s foremost priority, assuring that the legislature will continue to support the executive in stabilising the country.
