Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani has defended President Bola Tinubu’s current administration, arguing that former President Muhammadu Buhari’s government was far more nepotistic in comparison.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sani addressed concerns raised by northern leaders, who recently accused Tinubu of running a “non-inclusive” government.
The former senator dismissed the backlash as selective outrage, reminding Nigerians that Buhari’s administration was more lopsided.

He cited several top-level appointments made under Buhari, highlighting that many key positions were occupied by individuals from the former president’s home state, Katsina.
“For example, the DG of the SSS, Daura, was from Katsina; the DG of NIA, Rufai, was from Katsina; the MPA, my sister Hadiza, is from Katsina; Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank, Katsina; SMEDAN, Katsina; FRCN, Katsina; NIMET, Katsina; NIMASA, Katsina; the Railway Corporation, Katsina — the list goes on,” he said.
Sani recalled a time when the country’s security leadership was dominated by northerners.
The author also called out northern leaders for their hypocrisy for staying silent when their region benefited, but now speaking out under Tinubu.
“I would respect your stance on this issue if you had spoken out when nepotism benefitted you and your people,” Sani stated.
While he acknowledged that Tinubu must strive for fairness and national balance in governance, Sani urged Nigerians to be honest about the past.
“Two wrongs don’t make a right,” he said, “but we must be honest.
He cautioned President Tinubu and urged him to prioritize national unity by ensuring broader representation in government appointments.
“President Tinubu must not repeat Buhari’s model. Nigeria is too fragile for favoritism,” Sani warned.
Sani’s defense comes as criticism mounts over President Bola Tinubu’s alleged favoritism toward the southwest in federal appointments.
