World number one Jannik Sinner continued his impressive return to the court by defeating Jesper de Jong 6-4, 6-2 to reach the last 16 of the Italian Open.
With Monday’s win, Sinner stretched his unbeaten run to 23 matches. His win brings hopes of ending Italy’s 49-year wait for a home champion in Rome.
After dispatching Mariano Navone in his comeback match on Saturday, the 23-year-old looked sharp early against De Jong. He raced to a 4-1 lead in the first set, but signs of rust appeared as the Dutchman battled back.
Nevertheless, Sinner regrouped, reclaimed control, and powered through the second set to seal the win.
Although Sinner’s form had been momentarily halted by a three-month suspension, his rhythm seems intact. The ban, stemming from a positive test for clostebol, was later deemed unintentional contamination.

An independent panel cleared him of wrongdoing, with the World Anti-drug Agency (WADA) negotiating a short suspension rather than enforcing a lengthy ban.
Despite the disruption, Sinner appears determined to reclaim his best form, and the Italian crowd has backed him passionately. The world number one admitted the atmosphere in Rome was the best he’s ever experienced.
Up next for Sinner is a potentially tough test against 17th seed Francisco Cerundolo. The Argentine eliminated him at the same stage in 2023 and arrives in top shape.
Speaking after his victory, Sinner acknowledged the challenge ahead. “It’s going to be a good test,” he said. “He’s having an amazing season, so I must raise my level.”
Meanwhile, fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini’s campaign ended prematurely, as he retired while trailing 7-5, 2-0 against Casper Ruud. Injuries continue to hinder Berrettini’s progress.
