A shocking tragedy has occurred at the Wawa Cantonment in Niger State, where a soldier reportedly killed his wife before taking his own life.
The Nigerian Army confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday by its Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Stephen Nwachukwu.
According to him, the deceased soldier, identified as Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi of the 221 Battalion, is believed to have carried out the act on Saturday.
“The tragic incident which occurred on 11 October 2025 at Wawa Cantonment, Niger State, has caused a tensed atmosphere, leaving the barracks residents in shock as to the circumstances that could have led to such unfortunate incident,” the statement partly read.
The Army explained that the bodies of Lance Corporal Femi and his wife were found inside their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, within the barracks.

Preliminary findings revealed that the soldier was on official duty before the incident and had requested permission from his superior to attend to personal issues prior to returning.
“The NA deeply regrets this, while it commiserates with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased over the painful loss. The army also prays for the peaceful repose of their souls,” Nwachukwu added.
He further stated that the remains of the couple have been preserved as investigations continue to uncover the cause of the tragedy.
‘’Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, assured the public that the findings would be shared and further scrutinised, with measures implemented to prevent future occurrences,’’ Nwachukwu added.
