Southampton relegated from English Premier League

Southampton have been relegated from the English Premier League following a 2-0 home loss to Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints will play Championship football next season as their 11-year stay in the Premier League ends.

Star striker Aleksandar Mitrović, who had been banned for eight games for his push on referee Chris Kavanagh, scored after Carlos Vinícius had opened scoring.

Southampton knew they needed a win badly to have any miraculous chance at survival in the Premier League but the Saints displayed an uninspiring performance.

Carlos Alcaraz’s strike was disallowed for offside before Vinícius drew the first blood. After the opener, the Cottagers only continued to grow in confidence.

The pressure on the Soton defence continued to mount when former Chelsea and Arsenal man Willian saw his volley cleared off the line by Lyanco.

Harry Wilson’s cross for Mitrović’s headed goal was inch perfect as the Serbian scored his 12th league goal of the season.

Southampton will now have to make do with Championship football next season for the very first time since 2012 when they made it to the Premier League.

Super Eagles players Paul Onuachu and Joe Aribo are also relegated with Southampton.

For the fans of the duo, it’s a painful one especially when one remembers how deadly Onuachu was in the Belgian Pro League before he joined the Saints.

Aribo was a Europa League finalist with Rangers last season and scored the Scottish team’s only goal against Frankfurt as the final ended 1-1 in normal time. However, the German side won the title via penalties.
