Tottenham face drop for first time since 1978

Tottenham Hotspur have dropped into the Premier League relegation zone for the first time in 17 years. This comes after West Ham United’s 4-0 demolition of Wolves on Friday night pushed them into 18th place.

West Ham climbed out of the bottom three in emphatic style at the London Stadium. Braces from Konstantinos Mavropanos and Valentin Castellanos secured a vital three points for the Hammers. As a result, this lifted them to 17th and two points clear of the drop zone. Spurs, who were clinging to safety before kick-off, now sit 18th.

It marks the first time Tottenham have occupied a relegation position this late in a season since January 2009. At that time, Harry Redknapp’s side lost to Wigan Athletic. The last time they were relegated from the top flight was the 1976/77 season.

The timing could not be worse for incoming manager Roberto De Zerbi, who takes charge of his first game against Sunderland on Sunday. He becomes the third man to occupy the Spurs’ dugout this season. This follows stints by Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor.

Spurs have now failed to win any of their last 13 league matches. Eight of those have ended in defeat, and the club has not tasted victory at home since early December. With only seven games remaining, the prospect of Championship football is becoming uncomfortably real.

Across 31 Premier League seasons, a team occupying 18th place after 31 matches has been relegated on 21 occasions.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo replaced Graham Potter earlier in the season. He has steered his side through choppy waters in 2026. “We are in the fight. We made a big step today, important for us, but nothing has changed,” he said.
