Spain’s preparations for the World Cup final suffered a major disruption on Saturday after severe thunderstorms forced the cancellation of their final training session.
Luis de la Fuente’s squad had planned to train in New Jersey before the storm hit. The session was initially paused before being completely called off.”
The Spanish national team’s training session on the pitches at the Melanie Lane Training Ground in New Jersey has been suspended in accordance with the US storm safety protocol,” the federation confirmed.
“The players are currently taking part in a warm-up session indoors.”
Meanwhile, Argentina managed to complete their training after a brief delay nearby. Their session resumed after 45 minutes despite earlier weather concerns.

Officials confirmed that lightning activity triggered strict safety measures across the region. Regulations require suspension of outdoor events within an eight-mile radius.
Training can only resume after 30 minutes without further lightning strikes. However, no alternative session was scheduled for Spain.

FIFA also confirmed there would be no additional training slot available before the final. This left Spain with limited time on the pitch before kickoff.
City authorities had earlier issued warnings as weather conditions worsened. Residents were urged not to “risk your safety in these dangerous conditions”.

The final between Spain and Argentina will take place on Sunday night. La Roja reached the final by beating France, while Argentina edged England following a late comeback.
