Veteran actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has opened up about how she earned her first ₦1 million in 1999 from her breakthrough role as ‘Bisi’ in the popular educational television series I Need to Know.

In a video shared on her X account, the award-winning actress reflected on her early years in the film industry, describing the journey as one filled with challenges and determination.

“I made that around 1999. I started my career from like 1996, playing waka pass roles, 1997 going for auditions, getting a lot of nos,” she said.

Akindele recounted how perseverance eventually paid off when she landed the major role that changed her career. “Then I got one big yes with I Need to Know, and that is how I got my first ₦1 million.”

The Jenifa star went on to narrate how she spent the money, revealing that her first instinct was to share the good news with her mother, who offered a piece of timeless advice.

“What did I do with one million naira? First, I showed it to my mom. Of course, she knew about it, and then mommy advised that I have to pay my tithe first,” she recalled.

Following her mother’s counsel, Akindele said she tithed and then treated herself to new clothing and shoes to mark her success. “I paid my tithe, then I entered Yaba because I didn’t have shoes. I changed my entire wardrobe, including shoes and bags. The girl who had no shoes yesterday has today.”

Akindele’s story remains an inspiring reflection of resilience and growth in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, where persistence often paves the way to lasting success.
