Meta tested an option that let users sign up with their Facebook profiles instead of linking their Instagram accounts for Threads.
The test allowed incoming Threads users to populate their Threads graph based on Facebook account information rather than Instagram connections.
Meta said in its help documentation that “Signing up to Threads with your Facebook account helps unlock features that work across Threads and Facebook, like using the same login info to access both apps. If you create a Threads profile with your Facebook account, we’ll combine your info across Threads and Facebook.”

The overview stated that users who signed up this way would see ads on Threads tailored to their Facebook data and that their profile information and activity would be shared across both platforms. This option remained in early testing and was not yet available to all users.
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri noted in November that the original Instagram graph import had been removed from the onboarding flow because users preferred building a distinct graph on Threads.
By tapping into Facebook’s roughly billion-user base, Meta may drive additional sign ups for Threads. As of April, Threads had reached 350 million active users, closing in on X’s 600 million, and this new sign up path could further accelerate its growth.
