President Bola Tinubu has reiterated the need for synergy among Nigeria’s security agencies to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality.

Speaking at the fifth annual Strategic Security Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the President emphasised that only a stable security environment can foster economic growth.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu urged security agencies to prioritize inter-agency collaboration.

He cited his recent visit to the Office of the National Security Adviser and the National Counter Terrorism Centre, where he stressed that teamwork among security bodies is essential for effectively tackling crime.

“Synergy among all security agencies is vital to eliminating banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, and other forms of criminality,” he said.

“Please dedicate a significant portion of your deliberations to advancing strategies for multi-agency collaboration.”

The President also underscored that his administration’s ongoing economic and security reforms, though challenging, are necessary to restore investor confidence and stabilize Nigeria’s economy.

He highlighted efforts to reduce inflation, eliminate financial leakages, and improve infrastructure, including investments in roads, railways, and energy projects through public-private partnerships.

In addressing police welfare and operational capacity, President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Police Force.

He announced plans to recruit and retain a competent police workforce, renovate police barracks, enhance mobility, and upgrade essential combat and protective gear.

“We will continue collaborating with the police leadership to provide financial incentives to motivate officers. While no remuneration can fully compensate for their sacrifices, we remain committed to supporting them in their crucial role of keeping Nigeria safe,” he assured.

Acknowledging that security is a shared responsibility, the President called on communities to actively collaborate with law enforcement agencies, emphasising that public engagement and trust are crucial to inclusive policing.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun commended the Tinubu administration for its commitment to national security.

He highlighted Ogun State’s contributions to policing efforts, including the procurement of police vehicles, motorcycles, and high-tech drones in collaboration with the French government.

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun described the annual conference as a vital platform for assessing policing strategies and aligning them with global security trends.

He noted that past conferences have driven innovation, collaboration, and best practices in Nigerian policing. International police chiefs from Kenya and Rwanda also emphasised the importance of cross-border collaboration in tackling terrorism and transnational crimes.

Kenyan Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja Kirocho called for joint security training exercises, while his Rwandan counterpart, CG Felix Namuhoranye, stressed that security and economic development are intertwined.

The conference, themed “Improving Nigeria’s Internal Security and Economic Prosperity Through Inclusive Policing,” aligns with President Tinubu’s broader vision of national security as a foundation for economic stability.
