President Bola Tinubu has called for an emergency meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at a hospital in the United Kingdom.

This was announced in a personal statement signed by President Tinubu on Sunday evening, shortly after the news of Buhari’s death was confirmed.

The President also revealed that full state honours would be given to the late former leader.

“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” Tinubu wrote.

He further stated, “I have also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session on Tuesday, dedicated to his honour.”

Expressing deep grief, the President described Buhari’s death as a profound loss for the country. “President Buhari was to the very core, a patriot, a soldier, a statesman. His legacy of service and sacrifice endures,” he noted.

Tinubu highlighted Buhari’s contributions as both a military ruler from January 1984 to August 1985 and as a democratically elected President between 2015 and 2023, pointing out that his leadership was grounded in duty, honour, and commitment to national unity and development.

The President further praised Buhari’s unwavering stance during difficult times and commended his efforts in tackling corruption and promoting discipline in governance. “He championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption head-on, and placed the country above personal interest at every turn,” Tinubu said.

In his tribute, President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s widow, Aisha, their children, and other members of the Buhari family. He also paid homage to the people and traditional institutions of Daura, Buhari’s hometown in Katsina State.

“In this moment of national mourning, I extend my deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Aisha, with whom I have been in constant touch, his children, the entire Buhari family, and all who knew and loved him,” the President stated.

“I also extend my condolences to the government and people of Katsina State, most especially the people and traditional leaders of Daura Emirate,” he added.

Tinubu assured that the Federal Government would organise a befitting funeral to reflect Buhari’s stature and contributions to the nation. He concluded the tribute with prayers for the late President’s eternal peace.

“We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul,” he wrote. “May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus. And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.”
