Tinubu declares Nigeria’s unity ‘unshakable’, says economy has turned corner

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has declared that Nigeria’s unity remained “unshakable” and warned that the country would never surrender its sovereignty to forces seeking to destabilise it.

The President delivered the message yesterday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja while hosting an interfaith Iftar with traditional and religious leaders drawn from the six geopolitical zones.

Speaking on the security situation, Tinubu acknowledged that terrorist groups continued to carry out attacks but insisted their actions reflected desperation in the face of sustained military pressure.

“The terrorists are very desperate now because they are getting barraged and defeated,” he said. “They leave trails of blood in their wake. But I assure you of one thing: Nigeria will never surrender. We are not discouraged. We are going to win and win well.”

Tinubu also provided an update on Nigeria’s economic outlook, stating that the reforms introduced at the beginning of his administration had begun to yield results and had helped stabilise the nation’s finances.

According to him, the government successfully steered the country away from what he described as a looming financial crisis.

He said the administration had prevented the country from sliding into what he described as a “daunting” threat of bankruptcy.

The President also noted that the era when state governors relied heavily on bank loans to pay workers’ salaries had ended.

He added that relief measures for pensioners were gradually being implemented as fiscal conditions improved.

“I can report that the economy has turned the corner. It is getting better,” the President said, reaffirming plans to prioritise agriculture and education to secure the nation’s future.

The gathering also underscored the importance of interfaith harmony and national cohesion.

The Etsu Nupe, Yahaya Abubakar, who represented the Sultan of Sokoto and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), commended the President for the inclusive engagement and offered prayers for peace and stability in the country.

Similarly, Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), represented the ECWA President, Stephen Baba-Panya, and assured the government of the church’s support in strengthening the economy and improving national security.

Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, promising to remain committed to building a safer and more prosperous country.
