President Bola Tinubu has extended condolences to the government and people of the United States following the death of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter at the age of 100.

Carter, a Nobel Peace laureate who rose from modest roots in rural Georgia to serve as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, passed away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family, according to a statement by the Carter Center.

“President Carter showed us all how to remain relevant and impactful after leaving the esteemed position of President of the United States,” said Tinubu.

In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu praised Carter’s lifelong dedication to addressing global challenges.

“He tackled the challenges the developing world faced, from combating diseases to mediating conflicts and promoting democratic values. He exemplified grace, dignity and a profound respect for humanity,” the statement read.

“President Carter, the 39th President of the United States, was a beacon of service to humanity, demonstrating to leaders worldwide the profound impact of dedication beyond the highest office,” the statement added.

Reflecting on the historic ties between Nigeria and the United States, Tinubu recalled Carter’s landmark visit to Nigeria in March 1978. The visit, during Carter’s presidency, marked a pivotal moment in U.S.-Africa relations and strengthened Nigeria’s position at the heart of U.S. foreign policy in Africa.
