President Bola Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri in Borno State to Muhammadu Buhari University in honour of the late former president, Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari passed away on July 13, 2025, in a London hospital at the age of 82 after a long illness.
The decision was announced on Thursday, July 17, during a special session of the Federal Executive Council held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The meeting, the first of its kind under Tinubu’s administration, was dedicated to paying tribute to Buhari’s legacy in governance, military service, and personal conduct.
At the session, Tinubu described the late Buhari as a man who served Nigeria with strong moral values, simplicity, and discipline.
According to the president, the renaming of the university was not just to honour the late leader but also to serve as a reminder of his lifestyle and commitment to public service.

Tinubu reflected on their shared political journey, recalling how they worked together with other opposition forces to unseat a sitting government in 2015, a moment he described as Nigeria’s first real democratic power transition.
He praised Buhari’s decision to quietly retire to his hometown of Daura after leaving office in 2023, rather than remain politically active behind the scenes.
The president also acknowledged that, like all leaders, Buhari was not perfect.
However, he noted that the former leader stood firm in his beliefs, remained honest in power, and kept away from personal luxury despite holding the highest office in the land.
The late Buhari was buried on July 15 in Daura under Islamic rites.
In honour of his passing, Tinubu declared a seven-day national mourning period and ordered flags to fly at half-mast across the country.
