Tinubu to depart for Lagos to mark ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to depart Abuja on Tuesday for Lagos, where he will join other West African leaders to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The golden jubilee celebrations, which began last month in Accra, will continue in Lagos with a reenactment of the 1975 ECOWAS declaration at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island..

As ECOWAS Chairman, Tinubu will deliver a keynote address at a commemorative event at Eko Hotels and Suites, highlighting the regional bloc’s major milestones over the past five decades.

Also scheduled to speak is Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, Chairman of the NIIA and former Minister of External Affairs, who will review ECOWAS’s 50-year history.A panel of experts will further analyse the bloc’s evolution and impact during sessions at the NIIA.

Notably, the only surviving Head of State who signed the 1975 declaration, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), will participate in all activities and deliver an address at Eko Hotels.

Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, is expected to deliver the welcome address.

While in Lagos, President Tinubu will on Saturday, 31 May, commission a series of strategic infrastructure projects.

These include Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road, the flag-off of Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, and the 7th Axial Road.

He will also virtually commission the Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejia Section II Road and the Yakasai-Zalli Road.

Additionally, he will flag off the Kano Northern By-pass, Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I, Dabai-Kafur-Malumfashi, and Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III.

Tinubu is expected to observe the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House Mosque in Dodan Barracks before returning to Abuja.
