Tolu Arokodare has completed a season-long loan move to Dutch giants Ajax, ending a turbulent spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers that saw a training session cancelled after the striker refused to leave the pitch.
The 25-year-old Nigerian international will spend the 2026/27 season in Amsterdam, with the Eredivisie club securing an option to make the deal permanent for £17 million next summer.
Ajax will cover Arokodare’s full wages and pay Wolves a £1 million loan fee, with additional bonuses payable if the Dutch club qualify for European competition.
The move comes after a difficult debut season in English football, during which the striker scored just three Premier League goals in 33 appearances as Wolves suffered relegation.
The transfer brings an end to a chaotic summer for Arokodare, who was involved in a training ground incident at Wolves’ Compton Park facility after being told not to train with the first team. The situation escalated when the forward refused to leave the pitch, prompting manager César Peixoto to cancel the session and later draft in extra security.

Arokodare arrived at Wolves in a £24 million deal from Genk in September 2025 after finishing as the Belgian Pro League’s top scorer with 21 goals. However, he struggled to replicate that form in the Premier League and was also disciplined in April following a confrontation with teammate Mateus Mane.

Ajax finished fifth in the Eredivisie last season and will compete in the Europa Conference League play-offs. The Dutch giants, who have a rich history of Nigerian talent including Finidi George, Nwankwo Kanu, Sunday Oliseh, and Calvin Bassey, are betting on the striker to rediscover his goalscoring touch.
The deal includes a non-mandatory purchase option valued at around €22 million.
