Chelsea have agreed deals to sign Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck. The two veterans have a combined age of 71.
The signings have been met with ridicule from some quarters. But Xabi Alonso sees something others do not.
The Chelsea manager played under Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Rafa Benitez and Carlo Ancelotti. He learned the game from the best. He knows that leadership cannot be bought at 21. It must be earned over a decade of battles.
Henderson, 36, will join on a free transfer from Brentford and sign a two-year contract until June 2028. Welbeck, 35, has agreed a two-year deal from Brighton. The pair bring over 1,200 career appearances between them.
‘Alonso is acting from experience’
Dimitar Berbatov has defended Alonso’s strategy. “Some people are fuming about the fact that Xabi Alonso approved the signing of Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck,” the former Manchester United and Tottenham striker said.
Berbatov pointed to Chelsea’s existing squad. The club already have Joao Pedro, Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu as strikers. In midfield, they have Romeo Lavia, Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Dario Essugo. What they lack is a voice.
“Alonso is going for players that can bring in experience and leadership in the dressing room and also on the pitch,” Berbatov said. “Jordan Henderson is going to help the younger midfield players while Danny Welbeck is going to inspire the strikers.”

Berbatov emphasised Alonso’s pedigree as a player. “He played under Guardiola, Mourinho, Benitez and Ancelotti. He knows the game too well. For me he’s intentional about signing Henderson and Welbeck, and he’s acting from experience. Those that doubt what he’s doing today are going to applaud him once the season starts.”
Ferdinand’s disappointment
Rio Ferdinand gave a contrasting perspective. He is furious that Welbeck chose Chelsea over a return to Old Trafford.
“I’m so disappointed he didn’t sign for Manchester United,” Ferdinand said. “Michael Carrick messaged me and told me they were interested in signing him, but he doesn’t want to join the club because of the way they treated Cristiano Ronaldo. He has always loved Ronaldo, that’s his idol.”
Ferdinand believes Welbeck would have been a perfect fit for United’s attack. “He has more goals than every United striker last season,” he said. Ferdinand predicted that Welbeck will be Chelsea’s version of Joselu. “He moves like Cavani in the box, very smart,” he added. “I’ve been told Chelsea will sell Jackson or Delap.”

The signings represent a shift in Chelsea’s transfer policy. Under previous ownership, the club focused on acquiring young talent with high resale value. Alonso is prioritising balance. He needs leaders to guide a squad that finished 10th last season.
Henderson’s leadership is beyond question. He captained Liverpool to Premier League and Champions League glory. His presence will be invaluable for Chelsea’s young midfielders. Welbeck, who scored 13 Premier League goals for Brighton last season, brings experience and intelligence in the final third.
The criticism is loud. But Alonso has heard it before. The man who won the World Cup, two European Championships and the Champions League knows that trophies are not won by spreadsheet alone. They are won by character. And character comes with age.
