Top 4 areas Nigeria’s next president should prioritize

As Nigerians get ready to elect a new president come February 2023, amidst the myriads of challenges encumbering different sectors of the country, these are the sectors that the citizens are expecting the next president to prioritize and tackle especially when elected.

Security

Boko Haram, ISWAP, banditry, kidnapping for ransom and the like are some of the challenges the country’s sector is going through.

According to data obtained from the Nigeria Security Incidents Tracker by Beacon consulting, over 7,000 Nigerians have been killed and over 3,823 abducted as the country witnessed 2,840 incidents of insecurity between January 1 and July 29, 2022.

These project the level of insecurity in the country.

The next president must work to ensure that Nigerians can travel around the country freely without having to prepare ransom.

He must ensure that farmers can go to their farms without fear of attacks so that we can be food sufficient.

A secured country will attract foreign investments.

Power

The country’s energy is also one of the areas that the next president must prioritize in getting into office. The electricity situation in the country is really poor and it affects the economic, academic, health and other sectors of the country.

In an interview earlier this year, Ashish Khanna, World Bank’s practice manager for West and Central Africa Energy said Nigerian businesses lose $29 billion annually to poor electricity.

Stable electricity will impact the economy and increase productivity.

Unemployment

The creation of jobs in diverse sectors of the country like construction, agriculture, renewable energy, security, information and communication technology and others will go a long way to alleviate unemployment in Nigeria.

With about 23m Nigerian unemployed according to the National Bureau of Statistics, it really signifies a scary and dangerous stride.

An idle hand is the Devil’s workshop, the crime rate is always bound to go up with such amount of people jobless.

Education

This is another sector in the country that requires urgent attention.

Nigeria contributes about 10% to the world’s out-of-school children with about 20m kids out of school. The universities are perennially shut due to disagreements between the government and the staff’s unions.

Required funding must be directed to the sector because education is a social investment which is going to benefit the nation in the long run.
