Tragedy in the ring: Nigerian boxer Olanrewaju ‘Success’ collapses and dies during bout in Ghana

Respected boxer Oluwasegun Olanrewaju 'Success' gave up the ghost while in the ring

Nigerian boxing has suffered a heartbreaking loss following the sudden passing of Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju ‘Success’.

The 40-year-old fighter, popularly called “Success,” collapsed in the third round of his match against Ghana’s John Mbanugu. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday night at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

Olanrewaju was reportedly ahead on points when he unexpectedly lost consciousness just 15 seconds before the end of the round.

The Lagos-born boxer had an eventful professional career, stepping into the ring for 23 bouts. Over the years, he secured 13 victories—12 by knockout—while also recording eight losses and two draws.

Even though he had faced four consecutive defeats leading up to this fight, he remained a respected competitor.

His death has left a void in the boxing community, with many mourning the loss of a fighter who once held the National and West African light-heavyweight titles.

In addition to the grief, his passing has reignited debates about safety in the sport, particularly concerning Nigerian boxers and the need for stricter medical protocols.
