Thomas Tuchel has declared he will not select five England players again after they withdrew from the current squad.
The England head coach named Tino Livramento, Kobbie Mainoo, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford and Declan Rice. Tuchel stated they are not injured.
“I want to be direct,” Tuchel said. “Tino Livramento, Kobbie Mainoo, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford and Declan Rice have withdrawn from this squad. I will not call them again. They are not injured. That is the truth as I see it.”
Tuchel questioned why players report injuries when national duty arrives. “Why is it that when it is time to represent their national team, suddenly they are injured? It is embarrassing. These are players I have watched closely. Key players. Players I believed could help this country win trophies. But when they do not want to play, what can we do except call other options?”
Tuchel linked the withdrawals to England’s long wait for major silverware. “This is why England does not have a World Cup and has not won a major trophy since 1966. We will move forward with the players who want to be here. That is all.”
Palmer singled out
Tuchel reserved his strongest words for Cole Palmer. “I will never call Cole Palmer to the national team again. Maybe he can join the national team when I am gone.” Palmer has been ruled out of England’s forthcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. The Chelsea forward has started the season in strong form, scoring twice and providing two assists in three Premier League games.
John Terry contributed a measured response to the controversy. The former England captain was asked whether Palmer should return to the national team after being left out of the World Cup squad.
“Yes, of course,” Terry said. “We are human and we are supposed to have those feelings. Thomas Tuchel made his World Cup selection and left out Cole Palmer and some other players, yes, with reasons. One of them was based on form.”

Terry noted the competition for places. “You can see Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers in that position. Can Palmer win that place over them? No one can tell. The moment can change for anyone, though consistent performance still counts.”
Terry raised the question Palmer will ask. “He might not have been able to bench those players at the World Cup. But what about now? What has changed? Why him now? That will definitely be his question. Why does Thomas Tuchel want him now and not others? Is it because they did not win the World Cup?”
Terry rejected the idea that results alone drive selection. “Or are you saying that if the same squad had won the World Cup for England, some of those players still would not be there? No. I totally disagree with that.”
Terry suggested Chelsea gain from the situation. “On the other hand, Chelsea benefit more from this. Look at Cole’s performance since the beginning of the season. You can tell he wants to prove a point. Right now, the club is benefiting from that. I am sure they gave him the right advice on how to respond to the call.”
Tuchel faces a defining period. England enter Nations League fixtures without five senior players. The squad now leans on Bellingham, Rogers, Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane. Tuchel has drawn a line. Players who withdraw will not return while he remains in charge.
The Football Association has not commented. Palmer and the other four players have not responded publicly. Their clubs will monitor the situation closely. Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle United all have key players involved.
The standoff raises questions about player power, international commitment and the relationship between club and country. Tuchel has chosen confrontation over compromise.
