The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has refuted a circulating press statement that falsely claims the cancellation of all papers written during the recently concluded West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2025.
A spurious press statement, dated Saturday, July 19, 2025, has been widely circulated across social media platforms.
It alleged that the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with WAEC, invalidated the entire examination due to widespread malpractice, coordinated leakage of question papers, and unauthorised digital dissemination of exam materials.
However, WAEC management has unequivocally stated that the purported press statement did not originate from the Council.
In a statement by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Yaba, Lagos urged the public to disregard the misleading publication entirely.
The examination, according to Adesina, has definitively not been cancelled.

Adesina asserts that the false claim is being propagated by “mischief-makers” intent on discrediting the organisation and sowing confusion and panic among candidates who participated in the exam.
In a crucial update for candidates, Adesina confirmed that the marking of the scripts for the 2025 WASSCE has just been concluded. “Results for the examination are now slated for release on or before Monday, August 4, 2025”, Adesina said.
According to Adesina, the Council took the opportunity to inform the general public and all stakeholders that authentic information from WAEC is disseminated solely through its official and verified social media handles, as well as accredited media platforms across Nigeria.
Furthermore, Adesina said all official press releases are duly issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department of the Council, on behalf of the Head of National Office.
