The conflict in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Palestine has been a long-standing issue that has caused immense suffering for the people living in the region.
While a planned Hamas terror attack on innocent Isrealis on the 7th of October 2023 was despicable and should be condemned unequivocally.
What should also be condemned is the absolute disregard for international law, and the indiscriminate killings of children and civilians by the Isreali government, as they retaliate the October 7th attack and seek to find the perpetrators and rescue kidnapped citizens.
Israeli forces continue to intensify their assault on the occupied Gaza Strip which has included the bombing of hospitals and a refugee camp where thousands have been killed.
Amnesty International confirmed that they are documenting the unlawful and indiscriminate Israeli attacks, which continue to cause mass civilian casualties and must be investigated as war crimes.
As the violence escalates, it is crucial to shed light on the role of Western media and governments and to question their handling of the situation and explore the perceived hypocrisy and bias exhibited by Western media and governments when it comes to the Isreali-Palestinian conflict.
Selective Reporting and Narratives
For many years, Western media outlets have been criticized for their biased reporting on the Israel-Palestine conflict. It is often observed that the plight of Palestinians is underrepresented, while Israeli perspectives dominate the narrative. This disparity in reporting creates a skewed understanding of the reality on the ground.
Terminology Bias
Western media often favor terms that portray Israel as defensive and Palestinians as violent aggressors. The labeling of Israel’s actions as “retaliatory strikes” or “self-defense” frames their bombardments as defensive actions, downplaying the disproportionate impact on Palestinian civilians. This linguistic bias provides a sympathetic portrayal of Israel’s actions while disregarding the everyday suffering of Palestinians.

Lack of Context
The Western media’s failure to provide historical context to the current situation further exacerbates the perceived hypocrisy. The ongoing occupation, the blockade, and the displacement of Palestinians are fundamental elements that contribute to the conflict. Ignoring these crucial factors leads to a lack of understanding and perpetuates a narrative that frames the issue merely as a conflict between two equal sides.
Geopolitical Interests
It is no secret that Western governments have close alliances with Israel, which often influences their stance on the conflict. This alliance, coupled with economic and strategic interests, can lead to biased policies and selective support for Israel, despite the violations of international law. The hypocrisy lies in the discrepancy between Western governments’ rhetoric on human rights and their continued support for Israel’s actions in the region.
Suppression of Dissenting Voices
There have been numerous instances where journalists and activists who attempt to provide objective coverage of the conflict are silenced. This suppression further limits the dissemination of unbiased information and perpetuates the dominant narrative that favors Israel.
The ongoing killings in Gaza and the wider Israel-Palestine conflict highlight the need for objective coverage and unbiased analysis by the Western media.
The perceived hypocrisy and bias in their reporting and the actions of Western governments especially when compared to the Russia-Ukrainian war coverage raise questions about the role they play in perpetuating the cycle of violence and undermining the quest for a just and lasting peace.
As global citizens, it is essential to demand transparency, truthful reporting, and an end to the double standards exhibited by Western media and governments when it comes to the plight of the Palestinians.
