“We’ve matured”: Calvin Bassey backs Super Eagles to conquer AFCON 2025 in Morocco

Calvin Bassey believes Nigeria’s Super Eagles are ready to complete unfinished business at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). According to the Fulham defender, growth, experience, and lessons learned now define the squad heading into Morocco.

Bassey was a key figure during the 2023 tournament, where Nigeria fell narrowly to hosts Ivory Coast. However, he insists that setback has strengthened the team’s resolve rather than weakened belief.

Speaking to Fulham’s official website, the centre-back reflected on his personal development. He stressed that maturity now runs through the entire squad.

“I was 23 at the last AFCON,” Bassey explained.

“Now I’ve matured, and many players have gained valuable experience together.”He highlighted evolving leadership roles within the group.

As a result, responsibility is now shared rather than concentrated. “Everyone understands their role better,” he added.

“That balance will help us compete at the highest level.”

Nigeria head into the tournament as one of the favourites in Group C. They are drawn alongside Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The Super Eagles begin their campaign against Tanzania in Fés. Three days later comes a fierce North African clash with Tunisia. Meanwhile, the group concludes with a meeting against Uganda’s Cranes on December 30.

Nigerians are eager to see the Super Eagles go far in the competition – and ultimately, win it – especially after the disappointment of missing out on a second straight World Cup tournament.
