The Nigeria Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team has qualified for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, after defeating South Africa 8-3 in the final of the Commonwealth Games qualifiers in Angola.
The victory marks the first time Nigeria will feature in wheelchair basketball at the Commonwealth Games, a historic achievement for the sport in the country.
Nigeria dominated the qualifiers in Angola, capping an impressive campaign with a hard-fought win over their South African rivals in Thursday’s final.
Seyi Johnson, President of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, described the feat as a monumental achievement that will further upscale the rapid growth of the sport in Nigeria.
Johnson also acknowledged the role of the National Sports Commission, stating that its leadership played a pivotal role in the team’s success.
The Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
