Norway pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, defeating Brazil 2-1 to book a place in the quarter-finals and send the five-time champions crashing out of the tournament.
The Round of 16 clash appeared destined for extra time as both sides struggled to find a breakthrough for much of the contest. However, Norway’s star striker, Erling Haaland, rose to the occasion when it mattered most, scoring twice late in the game to silence the Brazilian supporters.
Brazil had opportunities to take control of the encounter and were handed a golden chance from the penalty spot in the first half. But Bruno Guimarães failed to convert, allowing Norway to remain firmly in the contest.

The South Americans dominated possession for long periods and pushed forward in search of the opening goal, but Norway’s disciplined defensive display frustrated Carlo Ancelotti’s men and kept the score level heading into the closing stages.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 79th minute. Haaland met a cross from Andreas Schjelderup and powered a header beyond the Brazilian goalkeeper to give Norway a crucial lead.
With Brazil committing more players forward in pursuit of an equaliser, gaps began to appear at the back. Norway capitalised on one of those moments in the 89th minute when Haaland struck again, punishing a defensive mistake to put his side firmly in control of the contest.
Brazil managed to reduce the deficit in stoppage time after Neymar converted a penalty, raising hopes of a dramatic comeback. However, the final whistle arrived moments later, confirming Norway’s famous victory.

The result extends Norway’s impressive record against Brazil in international football and secures their place in the World Cup quarter-finals. They will now face the winner of the Round of 16 meeting between Mexico and England.
For Haaland, the performance further strengthened his reputation as one of the world’s most lethal forwards. His two goals proved decisive on the biggest stage and played a major role in eliminating one of the tournament favourites.
The defeat represents a painful end to Brazil’s campaign. Having entered the competition among the leading contenders for the title, the Selecao were unable to find a way past a determined Norwegian side that delivered a disciplined and clinical display when it mattered most.
