Chelsea’s Women’s Super League (WSL) title hopes are in tatters after Beth Mead led Arsenal to a thoroughly deserved win at Stamford Bridge.
The Gunners took the lead in the 55th minute when Mead was played in by Alessia Russo and finished emphatically into the far corner.
Mead turned provider six minutes later, finding Mariona Caldentey in acres of space just inside the penalty area.
She confidently shifted the ball past the onrushing defender before calmly stroking into the bottom corner.
Chelsea’s best chances came when chasing the game but Erin Cuthbert and Sjoeke Nusken both failed to convert glaring headed opportunities. As a result, the hosts slipped towards a damaging defeat that may define their campaign.
Sonia Bompastor’s side remain six points behind leaders Manchester City, having played a game more. Meanwhile, Arsenal stay third but are now just a point behind the Blues.
Arsenal started quickly as they looked to put Wednesday’s disappointing League Cup semi-final loss to Manchester United behind them. They could have gone in front inside two minutes with early pressure.
Captain Katie McCabe shot straight at Chelsea keeper Hannah Hampton before Alessia Russo’s follow-up was cleared off the line. Despite keeping Chelsea pinned back, clear openings were initially scarce.
Stina Blackstenius headed just wide on the stroke of half-time after sustained pressure. In between, Chelsea threatened sporadically through Wieke Kaptein and Naomi Girma at set-pieces.
Mead ignites Arsenal as Chelsea lose their aura
Arsenal were the quickest out of the blocks again in the second half. With Chelsea calling for a foul on Sam Kerr, Russo fed Mead to thump in the opener.
Alyssa Thompson almost provided an instant response but her effort flew narrowly wide. Soon after, Caldentey doubled Arsenal’s lead and tightened their grip on the contest.

While Chelsea will rue missed chances, the visitors looked just as likely to add a third. Blackstenius forced Hampton into smart saves as Arsenal played with growing freedom.

Renee Slegers’ side can celebrate a first win over their London rivals since December 2023. It also gives City the chance to go nine points clear with victory on Sunday.
For the past six years, Chelsea have dominated the WSL. They won five titles under Emma Hayes and made it six last season.
There have been wobbles before, moments when the crown looked loose. This time, however, they may have left themselves too much to do.
A disjointed display reflected a season of growing vulnerability. The quality remains, but the air of invincibility has clearly evaporated. Arsenal pressed intelligently and Chelsea struggled to build from the back. Their first-half threat relied mainly on Thompson’s pace and set-pieces.
A power shift looms as City circle and history echoes
The defence, having conceded just six league goals, was breached twice in six minutes. Chelsea failed to react decisively, and Caldentey was given far too much freedom.
What should have sparked a title surge ended almost before it began. Manchester City now have a chance to finish them off next Sunday.
When Arsenal last won at Chelsea in the league, they were chasing a 15th title. Few predicted that season would mark the end of their dominance.

Five draws this season have already hurt Arsenal’s title hopes. Still, Mead finally delivered the clinical edge they had been missing.
While the title may be out of reach, this victory carries weight. There is also plenty ahead, including Champions League knockout football. Chelsea now face a must-win clash with City after eight days to regroup. Arsenal, meanwhile, turn attention to FAR Rabat and a lucrative final awaits.
