U-20 AFCON: Nigeria thump Tunisia 4-0 in third place match

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles were in scintillating form as they mauled their Tunisian counterparts 4-0 in the third place match of the U-20 AFCON tournament on Friday afternoon.

Ibrahim Muhammad, Ahmed Abdullahi and brace scorer Jude Sunday, were the goal getters for Nigeria against Tunisia.

Ladan Bosso’s boys hit the ground running from the start of the game and nearly scored three minutes into the encounter but Muhammad’s header failed to hit the target.

The West Africans pushed minute after minute and Samson Lawal saw his low drive go just inches wide of the post six minutes into the match.

Having shown enough intent and purpose, the breakthrough came in the ninth minute when captain Daniel Bameyi’s cross was bundled home by Muhammad.

The Tunisians were outplayed throughout the first period and created very few goalscoring chances.

Meanwhile, Nigeria advanced smoothly with their buildup play and their transition from midfield to attack was beautiful to watch for the most part of the game but the seven-time champions failed to add to their tally.

Nigeria score three in second half

Eleven seconds into the second half, Abdullahi pounced on the ball as it was about to be released by a Tunisian defender before running towards goal to bury the ball in the net. It was his first goal of the competition.

Three minutes later, Jude Sunday made it three after making a solo run into the box and then unleashing a powerful left-footed shot that flew past the Tunisian goalkeeper into the net.

In the 90th minute, Sunday grabbed his second and Nigeria’s fourth against Tunisia in the U-20 AFCON third place encounter. He fired a strong shot, this time with his right foot, that beat the goalkeeper once again.

Nigeria have now won the bronze medal of the U-20 AFCON for the third time.

The final of the Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations U-20 tournament will hold between Gambia and Senegal on Saturday, 11th March, 2023. The game is scheduled to kickoff 6:00pm Nigeria time.
