Champions League: Bayern beat PSG again to advance, Milan go through

Bayern Munich and AC Milan have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League after recording aggregate wins over PSG and Tottenham respectively.

The Bavarians beat PSG 2-0 at the Allianz Arena in the second leg of the last-16 tie. The Bundesliga outfit had earlier beaten Paris St-Germain 1-0 in the first leg in Paris.

After a goalless first half, Bayern opened the scoring one minute past the hour mark when Marco Veratti lost the ball when under pressure. Leon Goretza capitalized before setting up Cameroonian Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting who drove home.

The visitors laboured to get back in the game but their efforts and charges were not productive. Their play was largely characterised by misplaced passes and unfruitful attacking forays.

Lionel Messi was well marked out while Kylian Mbappe couldn’t bite.

In the 89th minute, Bayern sealed the win when substitute João Cancelo’s pass found another substitute Serge Gnabry who buried the ball in the net.

AC Milan eliminate Tottenham

At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs drew goalless with Milan, meaning the London club has been eliminated from the competition.

The home side lost 1-0 away to Milan in the first leg. Antonio Conte’s side looked destined for elimination after the first half on Wednesday night as they didn’t look ambitious enough.

Both sides came out flying and defended brilliantly to deny goal scoring opportunities. By the 21st minute, Cristian Romero, Clément Lenglet and Conte had already been booked.

Milan had decent chances to extend their aggregate lead but fluffed their lines when in great positions to score.

Romero was shown a second yellow and sent off in the 77th minute after a rash challenge. This meant Conte had to bring in a defender, Davinson Sánchez for Dejan Kulusevski to help solidify the defence. It also ensured Spurs attacking potency was curtailed as they hung on to the draw, ultimately losing on aggregate.

Bayern and Milan join Chelsea and Benfica as the four teams to have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League so far.
